Someone very dear to Jenni and me suggested we both read The Collaborative Way, a guide to running a business with harmony/sans hostility. I certainly didn't think I would tear up with recognition reading a text about human resources and company management, but this slim little book is so much more. I'm a sucker for new communication tools and I have a feeling these will follow me into many new chapters of my life as a boss (but mostly my life as a human.)
I'm recommending Annie John by one of my favorites, Jamaica Kincaid. Annie John is a young, doe-eyed Antiguan schoolgirl when the novel begins. Through Kincaid's masterfully delicate style of storytelling, we watch Annie pick up the burdens of the world as she grows up. This includes realizing her mother isn't perfect, experiencing depression, and disillusion with the facade of idyllic womanhood she'd been raised with. Annie John is a truly gorgeous coming-of-age book.
